Round three of the Australian Supercross Championship descended on Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium last Saturday, where the DPH Motorsport Factory Husqvarna Racing team contested the first triple-crown racing format of the supercross season. Dale Hocking, DPH Husqvarna team owner: “It was awesome to race close to home, and to be inside a stadium like GMHBA was amazing. Well done to Troy Bayliss Events. It just wasn’t our weekend though. Both Dylan and Hayden were better prepared this weekend than they’d been all year, with Hayden’s toes allowing him to practice through the week a little more and Dylan continuing to put the work in. With the third and seventh fastest times in qualifying, we were set for a strong night, but a mistake in his heat race saw Hayden have to qualify via the LCQ and have to work his way through the entire field in all three races. As for Dylan, much like the start to his motocross season, he has the tools to get the job done; he just needs to connect the dots to be racing at the front.”
Hayden Mellross: “I was feeling great all day, but with a costly mistake in my heat race, I had to transfer to the finals via the LCQ. Unfortunately, even after winning the LCQ, it gave me 17th gate pick for all three main events. Pushing hard to get the best starts possible, I worked my way from the back to an 8-5-1 score card. They weren’t the results I was after, but it was a huge positive to finish my last race with a win in main event three. I’ll be working harder than ever this week to make sure we achieve the results my team and I work so hard for. Thank you to everyone that supports me.”
Dylan Wills: “Things just didn’t go to plan for me on Saturday night. Once again, my speed and fitness were there, but without a strong start, I had my work cut out for me in all three races. I ran off the track in race one, and while pushing hard I clipped another rider and came down hard, putting me in last. Regrouping for the next two races, I had to work hard through the field in what was already a high-intensity race due to the short lap time and three-race format. I’m disappointed for sure, as I enjoyed the format. My fitness and speed are there, but I just need to put it all together with a strong start to really show my potential. I’m working even harder this week with the team to help link things together and come out firing in Adelaide next Saturday.”
